In affiliate marketing there are various ways to make money. This can be both good and bad. You should take a step back as an affiliate marketer and understand whether you are profitable or not.

Many affiliate marketers join an affiliate program with the idea that the going to make money. They quickly become distracted and join another program with the same idea. In a short amount of time they have joined multiple programs and are not making money in any of them.

The percentage of affiliate marketers who actually make money online is increasing. However, it is probably safe to assume that less than 10% of all affiliate marketers are profitable.

It does not cost a lot of money to do affiliate marketing, but it does take time. If you value your time on an hourly rate you can calculate how much you are actually spending every week working on your business.

You can then look at your affiliate payments to determine whether your profitable or not. Chances are you will see that you are not actually making money, but in reality are losing money every week.

Affiliate programs have come a long way since the mid 1990′s. It is now more complicated than it used to be. This means that for you to make money online you must become more educated on how to do affiliate marketing.

If you expect to succeed as an affiliate marketer online today here are 7 things you are going to need to learn how to do!

1. Finding a niche. This is not hard because just about anything you can think of has affiliate programs you can join.

The key today is to find a niche you can compete in. This means doing research for niches that are not saturated with competitors. One way around that is to promote products that people are searching for by name as opposed to promoting keyword phrases in general.

2. Doing keyword research. Google has a free tool you can use to come up with keywords that people are searching for. There are also many excellent free and paid tools. Traffic Travis comes to mind.

3. Building a website. You will need to buy a domain name. Choose a dot com version and keep it relevant to the theme your site is based on.

Host it at a good company such as Blue Host or Host Gator. Use the Fantastico program to set up a blog as your site. This is very easy to do.

4. Adding content. You will need to write, or hire someone to write original content at first.

Depending on the theme of your site you may get away with no more than 3 to 5 articles of 400-500 words. Auto blogging has become a good way to get content without doing all of the work yourself.

5. Finding affiliate programs. Start by joining eBay, Amazon, and Clickbank. For ppc programs join Google Adsense. For CPA programs check out Offer Vault and Commissions Junction.

6. Monetizing your site. Get a couple of banner and text ads placed on your site. Over time you can add to this. Content and traffic is more important at first. Without it no one will see your affiliate products anyway.

7. Promotion. I would suggest looking at Blog Blueprint as a very good training program on promoting your site. For free info join the Warrior Forum. The majority of your time will spent on advertising and marketing your site, so you need to learn how to do it.

Selling digital information products was the suggested way to make money online when I first started in affiliate marketing several years ago. However, today I see a trend in selling physical affiliate products and it makes sense for several reasons.
